My parents both attended this school in the 1930s. There were two classes held at each end of the big room with over 40 pupils in each. Yet by the time they left at 14 or 15 they could read and write well, had mastered basic mathematics, could quote poetry and Chaucer and Shakespeare, and knew a lot about nature, birds trees etc
