Co-operative Chemist and Gas Showrooms

In High Street Eastleigh

The alley in the picture is no longer covered. The building to the right became Torbocks and then Iceland.

Down the alley was The Eastleigh Printing Works, where I started a six-year apprenticeship as a compositor In 1955. The Works were owned by Mr Henry Ivill and Mr George Alexander at this time. This office was a general jobbing one and also produced The Eastleigh Weekly News and Hants Gazette. I can remember most of the names of the other employees at this time. I was finally made redundant in 1987 after a change of ownership and premises.
